Who says denim jackets are no longer in style? Granted, their popularity has declined over the past few decades, but they remain a viable choice of outwear for fashion-conscious men. To learn more about denim jackets and how to wear them, keep reading.
Check The Tone
When choosing a denim jacket, consider the color and tone. Traditionally, most denim jackets feature a light blue tone, similar to blue jeans. This is a classic choice that’s easy to wear with other clothes. However, denim jackets are available in many other colors, including dark blue and black.
Wear a Contrasting Color Under Your Denim Jacket
Regardless of which color you choose for your denim jacket, it’s usually a good idea to wear a shirt in a contrasting color. The picture above, for instance, depicts a man wearing a light blue denim jacket with a dark blue plaid button-up shirt. The dark blue shirt contrasts with the light blue jacket. Following a similar approach with your outfit is guaranteed to improve your appearance.
Check the Fit
Of course, you should only wear a denim jacket if it fits correctly. If it’s too big, it will create the “clothes hanger” effect, making it appear that your body is a clothes hanger with an awkwardly large jacket. If your denim jacket is too small, it will look equally as bad while also restricting your movement. After putting on the denim jacket, move your arms around to ensure it fits without being too large or too small.
Go Light for Spring and Summer
Not all denim jackets are heavy. Some are made with a thinner type of denim and without the fur or quilted lining. These jackets are ideal for the otherwise warm spring and summer months. The lighter fabric keeps you cool and stylish. When the fall and winter months roll around, however, you may want to switch to a heavier and more seasonal-appropriate type of denim jacket.
Watch the Jeans
If you plan on wearing jeans with a denim jacket, you should choose a different color/style. In other words, you shouldn’t wear indigo-colored jeans if your denim jacket is also indigo-colored. Like the shirt, these two items should contrast with each other. If you wear jeans in the same color as your jacket, they will seemingly blend together to make it appear as if you are wearing a jumpsuit — and that’s never a good thing.
